Carol Jo Sloan
Carol Jo Sloan
June University Support Staff Employee of the Month
STARTED AT KU: 1998
CURRENT TITLE: Administrative associate senior, Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering
WHAT THAT MEANS: In addition to serving as the receptionist and handling the mail, Sloan maintains records of the architectural engineering students, distributes information to faculty, summarizes teaching evaluations, coordinates the Professional Development Series in Kansas City and more.
NOTABLE: An income source for the department is the series of technical lectures presented weekly at Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City, and attended by practicing engineers from the Kansas City and Topeka areas. Sloan coordinates the professional development program, from handling ticket sales and tracking attendance, to traveling to Kansas City weekly with the faculty member presenting the lecture. This is only one of many activities for faculty, students and outreach that she facilitates.
Alexis McKinley Jones
Alexis McKinley Jones
June Unclassified Employee of the Month
STARTED AT KU: 2003
CURRENT TITLE: Director of recruitment, School of Engineering
WHAT THAT MEANS: In addition to working with prospective students, Jones has expanded her primary role to also focus on student retention for the school and to counsel students on Study Abroad opportunities. She also meets with prospective students and their families and, whether one-on-one or at frequent information sessions and college fairs, is a terrific advocate for the engineering programs. Jones processes undergraduate admissions, organizes the School of Engineering Ambassadors team and the Engineering Learning Communities.
NOTABLE: Jones has made great strides with study abroad options for engineering students since returning from the School of Business. Her efforts are improving the numbers of traditionally underrepresented engineering students in KU Study Abroad programs. She also hosts or plans visits of those from other schools wanting to visit the School of Engineering.
