Current title: Administrative assistant, office coordinator, Student Health Services Laboratory

What that means: Black greets patients, answers the phone, schedules appointments, maintains files, completes large amounts of documentation and supervises one staff member. She also reviews billing reports for errors.

Notable: Black has daily one-on-one contact with patients and health care providers and is a great resource for both groups. She is extremely knowledgeable about test requirements and is adept at providing physicians with information that helps them make decisions that in the best interests of patients. Her interactions with the student patients are unfailingly empathetic and professional. She is mindful of their needs, listens carefully and answers their questions. Students leave the lab feeling that they received good care and that she genuinely cares about them.

Black has seen Student Health Services move from paper charts and a manual ordering system to implementation of a sophisticated electronic health record system. She embraces the challenges that change brings. She has also served on the committee that implemented the system, offering vital insights and suggestions based on her knowledge of the functions that users would need.

Chris Bishop

Chris Bishop

Current title: Adviser, Department of Curriculum and Teaching, School of Education

What that means: Before moving to the School of Education, Bishop worked as a CLAS graduation adviser. Bishop participated in degree certification for 53 departments and 100 degree options, certifying hundreds of students each academic year for CLAS graduation eligibility. She advised transfer students, undecided students with more than 90 credit hours, students on probation and other special populations. She provided support to faculty advisers, handled student petitions and completed NCAA certification for student athletes.

Notable: Bishop works closely with staff in Student Academic Services, the University Advising Center, Kansas Athletics advising, the Office of Admissions and Scholarships and faculty advisers. Her interactions with each of her contacts were characterized by her collegial spirit and her dedication to accuracy.
