Natalie J. Timson

Natalie J. Timson

Unclassified professional employee of the month

Started at KU: Timson joined the student housing staff as complex director for Oliver Hall in July 2005.

Current title: Assistant director for residence life, GSP-Corbin.

What that means: Timson oversees staffing and training operations in the Lewis/Templin and Ellsworth/Hashinger housing complexes on Daisy Hill. In the spring, she begins planning for her role as manager of the KU Summer Conferences and Camps program. She negotiates and implements a wide variety of contract terms and services for musicians, athletes and other guests who will spend approximately 10,000 bed nights on campus throughout the summer.

Notable: Kip Grosshans, associate director of student housing, notes that successful summer conference operations require much careful coordination across many units to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for guests. “Natalie is a total pro, and the program is literally a million-dollar addition to salaries, goods and services in the local economy,” he said. He calls her an “unsung ambassador” for KU.

Jennifer Wamelink, associate director of student housing and Timson’s supervisor, says that as coordinator for summer conferences, Timson successfully solves a complex logistical puzzle in order to ensure a positive first impression of KU for countless guests. She selects, trains and supervises the residence life student staff members who work in the halls during the summer. She collaborates with numerous campus departments such as Dining Services, Continuing Education and the Department of Athletics, coordinating the housing and dining needs for Sunflower Girls State, athletic camps, the Freshman Summer Institute, the Health Careers Pathways program, Upward Bound, Midwestern Music Camp, International Student Orientation and many more.

Beth Lowe

Beth Lowe

University support staff employee of the month

Started at KU: 1988.

Current title: Administrative professional, Department of Speech-Language-Hearing.

What that means: As the primary administrative staff for the chair, Lowe is responsible for office functions, but she also manages class schedules and room assignments, assigns advisers and organizes the annual graduation ceremony. She has willingly taken courses or taught herself new skills to handle additional responsibilities, such as maintaining the department Web site. Others in the department also know her as a valued resource on university policies and procedures.

Notable: Speech-language-hearing underwent reaccreditation this past spring, and Lowe played a major role in the successful site visitation in March. In addition to gathering and organizing materials in preparation, she created a complex database to track student coursework and clinical hours. The site visit team commended Lowe for her assistance and reported that few programs are ever found to be in complete compliance, as was KU’s.
